»Elementary Christian Formation
Elementary age children have classes at 9 a.m. and attend the 10 a.m.
worship service with their families. There is an optional gathering
time for younger elementary children in the chapel with one of the clergy
during the sermon. This group then rejoins the congregation in the sanctuary
for the remainder of the worship service after the sermon.
Program
for Winter-Spring 2008
The Elementary Christian Education program will continue
offering 3 - 5 week units of study, while also following the themes
presented by the lectionary readings for worship. In January we will begin
with the unit Disciples Then, Disciples Now. We will learn
from the first disciples of Jesus, using them as our example for the work we
are to do today.
Our second unit will be Looking at Jesus through Gospel
Eyes. We will provide a brief introduction to all four of the gospels. Then
we will learn about Life in New Testament Times, exploring
village life. We will end our "school year" with our annual trip to the
Catacombs.
Each session starts with an all-elementary community
gathering time, which includes storytelling and music. We will continue to
hold our opening gathering in an informal setting, in one of the third floor
classrooms.
Children then spend the remainder of the hour split into
two age groups engaged in activities that reinforce the Bible story theme.
We will primarily follow a traditional Sunday school structure for
the rest of the year, With this structure, children
remain with the same teacher/shepherd combination for the entire unit. We explore Bible stories using multiple
educational methods and tools, realizing that children learn using a variety
of senses and skills.
