»Scheyer Library

The Scheyer Library contains more than 2,300 volumes for adults and more than 1,600 volumes for children. It has been part of University Congregational United Church of Christ for over fifty years. It contains an eclectic collection of books and materials, from Biblical texts to philosophy, psychology, biography and fiction.

The library is open for browsing and circulation on Sunday mornings. According to its statement of purpose, the library provides books and other teaching and life enrichment materials for the church community - members, non-members, adults and children. Its primary purpose is to support programs of the church and spiritual inquiry and growth. Criteria for the materials included in the collection include the following:

  • Reflect the diversity of interests and opinions within the church community.

  • Be free of prejudice based on race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

  • Include various viewpoints of controversial issues.

  • Be of good quality technically (sturdy binding, legible print, etc.).

  • Be accurate in factual content.

  • Be selected by the librarians with the assistance of the Library Committee on the basis of recommendations, reviews, requests, and needs, in accordance with the above guidelines.

The library was named after Elwin Scheyer, an ordained minister who served the church as Business Administrator.
