Hill Women: Finding Family and a Way Forward in the Appalachian Mountains
By Cassie Chambers
2020 Thorndike Press
Owsley County, Kentucky – the author’s home county – is one of the counties hit by devastating floods in August. Please pray for them and think how we could help. To get an idea of their lives before the flooding, read this book. The women are, indeed, strong under incredibly tough conditions. Also read it to find out how the author’s white mother coped with the challenge of changing enough to go to college in the next county over. Then she raised her daughter so that daughter, bursting with ambition, braved finishing high school in New Mexico, then went on to Wellesley, Yale, and Harvard Law School. Though desperately lonely for her people, Cassie Chambers survived by keeping her eyes open and acting like others around her. Eventually she returned to Louisville to serve as legal aid to the impoverished people of Eastern Kentucky.
