It’s still raining?, he asked.
Yes, I said, Winter is coming.
Game of Thrones, right?
What’s that?
You’re kidding me. Â It’s huge. Â A cultural phenomenon like Sienfeld was in the 90’s.
I did see an episode of that once…
Wow…I’d sure like to know what kind of culture cave you’ve just climbed out of.
It’s true.
I wouldn’t know Miley Cyrus if she walked into the room,
can’t tell you the name of our team’s quarterback or star pitcher,
haven’t a clue what they named the prince’s baby,
or the new boots that are all the rage.
But I do know,
winter is coming.
Feel it dripping off me
as I stand here wet and cold
by the cashier, shivering,
as he tells me the story
of a world long past
violent and tempestuous,
beyond the time of dragons.
Yes, there is so much I do not know
but this I do:
that the leaves are brown
on dark scarred limbs
that dragons still live
and the Middle Ages
not so far past,
that it’s raining still,
and winter is coming.

I think I must have been in the same cave as you, looking with awe at the brilliant green moss and the pebbles, the autumn leaves, and that wonderful tree silhouetted against the glorious sky.
Yes, Carol – I join you in recognizing these gifts of beauty and grace along the way when I slow down to see them! Hoping that presence of wonder and awe makes room in us all these Advent days,
Peter
