Another year is drawing to a close and it seems like a good time to summarize the many accomplishments of the Hamidi family over the past year.
- On May 28th, the family moved into their current 4 bedroom, 2 bath apartment, and volunteer team members organized the move.
- Dad acquired a job at the airport rental car complex and bought a used car to use for commuting.
- All family members acquired Orca cards, learned how to use them, and can now get around to school, jobs, and visits with friends.
- The family obtained phones, computers, and a TV which assists them in connecting with the world at large and to accomplish school assignments.
- Volunteers used donated funds to take the family shopping for clothing and necessary household items and have taken the family on various excursions, both to get a sense of their new community and to have fun.
- Mom received a gently used sewing machine and hopes to get seamstress and tailoring work, which is how she helped support the family while living in Afghanistan.
- Volunteers Throughout spring and summer, all 8 family members received twice-a-week English tutoring sessions from volunteer team members. As school began in the fall, the 5 younger members began receiving school-provided ESL instruction, while Mom and Dad began tutoring with the Refugee Women’s Alliance (reWA).
- The 5 younger children now attend school in Renton, while the oldest son (and main interpreter for the family) attends community college with the initial goal of receiving a GED and also has a part-time job.
- The family is now faced with and desires more independence. For this to happen, the parents in particular must improve their English language skills in order seek and acquire employment with a living wage. Volunteers are assisting them to move forward toward these goals.
Deep gratitude to the many folks who have donated their time, talents, and resources to help this family gain footing in our region of the planet.
