As part of our commitment to learning about and building a relationship with the Duwamish people, Ken Workman spoke to over 60 of us on Sunday March 7 via Zoom. Ken is the 4th generation great grandson of Chief Seattle and a former Duwamish tribal council member as well as a former president of the Duwamish Tribal Services.
Ken shared with us the Duwamish’s relationship with all living things, their language and spiritual beliefs, and the cost incurred on the Duwamish due to the government’s refusal to grant sovereignty to their tribe.
Instead of an honorarium Ken encouraged us to contribute to “Real Rent Duwamish”
(www.realrentduwamish.org), which helps offset the lack of government funding that other tribes receive. Real Rent Duwamish provides funds to sustain the Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center in West Seattle and their environmental stewardship.
This week the Duwamish people sent out a request to support their request to the WA legislature to be recognized as a sovereign nation. You can find the petition here: Federal Recognition for the Duwamish Tribe at Change.org please consider advocating for the Duwamish by adding your signature.
