The writings of Ross Gay have been a personal joy for Pastors Steve and Amy. This book has provided inspiration for our Eastertide theme of Delight in Life. We will include excerpts from Gay’s The Book of Delights; however, the book isn’t essential to the worship experience.
Ross Gay’s publisher describes The Book of Delights as “a spirited collection of short lyric essays, written daily over a tumultuous year, reminding us of the purpose and pleasure of praising, extolling, and celebrating ordinary wonders. Ross Gay’s The Book of Delights is a genre-defying book of essays—some as short as a paragraph; some as long as five pages—that record the small joys that occurred in one year, from birthday to birthday, and that we often overlook in our busy lives.”
Some folks might find his writings tilting away from the sacred side of the sacred-profane spectrum. Others might see his writings as a great expression of a spiritual life. If you’re interested in diving deeper into this book, it is available at the Seattle Public Library, or we recommend Estelita’s Library, a Black/Brown owned Community Bookstore in Seattle
