Our Strengthen the Church national United Church of Christ offering will help our congregations continue to be church in new ways during this ongoing pandemic. Last year’s STC giving helped Plainfield Congregational Church, just outside Chicago, when it found that its attempts at virtual services did not display the required expertise. A Strengthen the Church grant gave financial resources to hire professional help. As they report, “We have expanded our reach beyond the doors of our sanctuary to the greater local and world community. We have grown and the financial boost has allowed us to be more than we could have imagined.”
Strengthen the Church also funded programs like one co-sponsored by Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence, Kansas, with a related non-profit, to support the local Haskell Indian Nations University. Students and staff were suffering from deep pandemic hardships. A grant went to a student who needed funds for an emergency flight home in order to bury five family members.
Moving forward, Strengthen the Church grants will continue to support churches which need help and resources for community outreach during the pandemic. When these needs lessen, funding will return to church renewal and community engagement projects.
