Just a bit over 1 year ago, the PSC was created and charged by Church Council to seek a candidate to fill the position that opened when Pastor Catherine Foote retired. Berta Hollowell and Royce Morrison agreed to co-chair the committee and soon we were a total of 11 members.
Our first task was to review and edit our Church Profile – a document that put into words where we are as church and what type of pastor we are looking for to join our leadership team. Upon completion (after many versions), the Profile was posted and is available for prospective candidates to read and respond to. The Profile is also posted on our church website – and runs approximate 53 pages.
Since the posting, we have received 22 applicant profiles (or résumés) and selected four for interviews. Of those four, only three were available for first interviews which were held via Zoom. Two of those candidates were invited for second interviews here in Seattle where they were also able to meet with the other pastors and some of the church staff. After those interviews, one candidate informed us they were pursuing a call with another church, and the other was selected by us pursue for call. Discussions were held with that candidate regarding a contract and the details of the position for about two weeks and then we were informed that the candidate would not be accepting our call.
While the news was not what we were expecting, the committee understands that the universe is a mysterious place and we do not control the ways in which it reveals itself. We have faith in the process we have started. For the moment, the committee will be in consultation and discernment with council as to our next steps. Stay tuned.
