For all of us…
Since We Cannot Physically Attend Church
Dear friends, Here are more ideas for spiritually balancing during these times of isolation.
Practice “beholding,” which means truly attending to someone or something else. Go outside and find a beautiful tree or flower or leaf. Really look at it for a sustained period of time. Absorb its details and its beauty. Use all of your senses – touch, smell, vision, hearing.
Expand your beholding by sketching or painting what you see. Don’t worry about right or wrong, just get some colored pencils or watercolors and paper and start drawing or painting.
Use your computer to look closely at the art in some of the great art museums. Choose a painting you enjoy. Try painting or drawing in that same style. Encourage your children or grandchildren to do this. They are amazing at this task.
Use your camera to zoom in closely to something as simple as a rose petal that has fallen on the grass or the center of a beautiful flower. Practice noticing the beauty of the tiniest details of creation. Reflect in your journal about what you are learning from this process of beholding.
Transfer your new skills of beholding to deeply looking at someone you love. Hold them in your gaze, with love. Imagine God holding you in that way.
