Now that our church has committed to being a 100% Voting Faith Community, we’re tracking some of the many actions congregants are taking to encourage voting this fall as a sacred, faithful act.
Dennis and Barb O’Brien recently returned from their sixth trip to Wisconsin with Common Power https://commonpower.org/. Their aim was to encourage voting, with a particular focus on two State constitutional amendments which would foster gerrymandering and take away the Governor’s authority in case of emergencies. They spent five days on this trip, funded by themselves, and loved the experience.
Barb says,
“When you asked me why I go to Wisconsin to knock on doors, I told you, “It brings joy to my soul. I know that that sounds trite, and I know that you don’t know that I would rarely say anything like that. However, finding an active way to work towards saving democracy and decency and fairness and justice feels so critical to me. When I leave this life, I want to leave the world better for my kids and for other people’s kids. And all the things that I want such as climate/environment protection and gun control and reducing wealth disparity will definitely not happen if we lose our democracy and the ability to work together. So, working on this election seems crucial to me.” Good news, both amendments failed by a large margin in the primary. Dennis commented, “We feel so productive doing this!”
They are going back to Wisconsin again in October.
